The Isle of Mull is the unsung hero of the Inner Hebrides. An island that has high rugged peaks, huge sea cliffs and beautiful woodlands. It is gentler than Skye but still dramatic and certainly much quieter. It has lots of fascinating smaller islands off its west coast: Iona with its abbey that Columba established in AD563; Staffa with the highly acclaimed Fingal’s Cave. This adventure connects with the finest scenery and history that the island has to offer, walking rugged coasts, through woods to waterfalls, exploring the ancient Neolithic and Celtic past.
It takes just under an hour to reach Mull by ferry. With so many walks along its immense coastline of distant peninsulas and deep inlets, the rhythm of the tides soon slows down your pace. A major attraction are Mull’s smaller islands: Iona, Staffa, Ulva, so time needs to be taken to appreciate these.
This ‘Tour & Trek’ can include the following:
A day on Iona, walking over the moor to the south to visit the Bay of the Coracles where St Columba arrived, bringing Christianity from Ireland. Hear the stories of the saint as we walk the shores and visit the abbey that grew out of Columba’s humble monastic beginnings.
A boat tour to see the cathedral-like magnificence of Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa.
A hike along the rugged shore to enter MacKinnon’s cave that goes deep into the cliff.
Walk in the woodlands with growing views of the colourful houses of Tobermory.
Ascend an extinct volcano and walk its rim over the crater lake with expansive views north and west to Ardnamurchan and many islands.
A tour of the northern half of the island with a hike through ancient woodlands down to the golden sands of Calgary Bay.
Drive down the slow, windy road to Lochbuie to discover its mysteries of a stone circle, an isolated mausoleum, a castle keep and a gem of a chapel.
There are other options to see and do, which can be planned in:
Taking the short ferry across to Ulva to walk beyond the fine woodlands to see the impressive basalt rock formations and enjoy refreshments at a charming tea room.
A lengthy hike along the coast, through forest, over moor down to waterfalls, a hill fort and symmetrical rock formations along the shore.
An ascent of a high peak.
A boat trip out to the Treshnish islands to see the abounding birdlife.
