Fife’s quaint fishing ports of Elie, St Monan’s and Pittenweem has been the most popular single day outing over the summer. And for good reason: it makes for a very enjoyable day trip, not that far out from Edinburgh, combining a lovely coastal walk with a seafood lunch for shellfish fans (but there are other things besides fish on the menu).

The coast has a lot of history from ruined castles, watchtowers, windmills and a cave used by a Celtic monk, all of which can be closely inspected, led on foot for 90 minutes or more by your own guide.

The chocolatier will probably draw you in for a purchase or two. You won’t be forgotten and will be collected along with the others in the minibus.

Pittenweem truly comes alive during it’s week-long summer arts festival when many a private home becomes a public gallery for paintings, jewellery, pottery and other handicrafts.
